The Royal Commission is committed to conducting its work with sensitivity and empathy. Employing people from a diverse range of backgrounds and life experience is vital to our work.
From time to time the Commission receives applications from people who may have criminal convictions in their past. Given the nature and subject of our work, the Commission considers these on a case-by-case basis.
We know that suffering abuse in care can have consequences across a person’s life. Sometimes the effects are crime and incarceration. Because of the consequences of abuse in care, many people are unable to break that cycle. Hiring people with previous convictions is one way to change that. However, we take our obligations to survivors seriously and aim to do no harm.

If you are interested in working for the Inquiry this page lists the current vacancies and instructions on how to apply.
We welcome enquiries from all people, including Māori, Pacific People, LGBTTIQA+ and disabled communities including people with mental, psychological, or social disabilities, and make reasonable accommodations. Diversity is our legacy and our future, and we value diversity in the workforce.
We’re committed to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, diversity in age, gender identity, race, sexual orientation, physical or mental ability, ethnicity, religious or ethical beliefs, political opinion or union affiliation and perspective. We want all employees to have access to equal employment opportunities, and are committed to make our environment accessible, including facilities, information and IT. We want our employees to feel empowered to share their experiences and ideas, and where everyone, from any background, can do their best work and who are encouraged to bring their whole selves to work.
The Commission’s COVID-19 policy requires that all new employees be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and provide evidence of vaccination, such as a valid My Vaccine Pass. If a person has an exemption for vaccination from the Ministry of Health and the Commission believes the new starter could perform the role safely, we may be able to offer that person the role.
