Pacific disabilities workers fono March 2022
The fono was held on zoom. The purpose of the fono was to engage with Pacific workers in the disability space. Participants in the fono discussed the cultural and systemic barriers for workers, as well as the experiences of Pacific survivors and witnesses in the following health and disability care settings;
- Psychiatric hospitals or facilities;
- Residential or non-residential disability facilities;
- Non-residential psychiatric or disability care and
- Health camps.
Participants in the fono shared:
- Pacific disabled peoples have high and complex needs.
- There should be a system where staff working with Pacific disabled peoples feel comfortable and confident to support people in care.
- Mainstream providers need to build capacity for Pacific peoples. There needs to be a detailed approach on how care for Pacific peoples is monitored.
- There is a lack of Pacific representation in the disability sector. A conversation about the lived experiences of Pacific disabled peoples and workers needs to be raised within the Pacific community and those who make key decisions in the sector.
- It is important for the Pacific community to normalise the conversation of abuse with families, encouraging them to ask questions and challenge the system. Language has also been identified as a barrier for family members hoping to raise concerns.
