Marylands School (St John of God) Hearing 9 to 17 February 2022
About the hearing
The Inquiry heard from survivors, church leaders and State witnesses about the abuse and neglect by the Hospitaller Order of St John of God (St John of God) religious brothers that occurred at Marylands School and two other institutions in Christchurch – St Joseph’s Orphanage and the Hebron Trust.
The hearing explored:
- the nature and extent of abuse that occurred at Marylands School
- why the abuse happened
- the impacts of that abuse on survivors and their families
- whether there were any systemic, structural or other factors which contributed to the abuse
- whether the response by the Catholic Church to allegations of abuse was adequate.
